I have a busy, successful private practice as a licensed massage therapist, thanks a lot to the techniques shared in Mr. Ohashi's book. I graduated from Ohashi Institute a long time ago, used the techniques, then moved to Hawai'i and learned lomilomi massage and lately studied rolfing, orthopedic massage, craniosacral therapy, trigger point therapy, etc. It seemed like shiatsu techniques were not enough, because I had to work with injuries, pain, and other soft tissue problems. But ....
What can I say except that what Mr. Ohashi shares works! It works very well. After studying "deep tissue massage" from leading western experts, I learned to use Ohashi's techniques not only with meridians in mind, but also with muscles, trigger points, etc. in mind. It works!!!
Many techniques in his book are actually myofascial release, combined with rather low-key thai massage stretches and other kind of stretches. Many shiatsu points are in areas that are likely to have trigger points and/or get stuck. For example, the last point on the kidney meridian is where the first rib attaches to the sternum, so it is used for people with tight shoulders and neck due to stress. If you go to a chiropractor, they will punch you into that spot with the intent to release the first rib. A shiatsu person will press there to balance your kidney meridian. Ohashi shows you the stretch that will make pressing into that point very effective and easy.
I feel so extremely grateful to have had the privilege of studying with Mr. Ohashi. He teaches proper body mechanics and movement, and that helps so much when you have to do many treatments per day. I feel good after working.
Overall, I highly recommend this book, and I do hope you enjoy it. If you can, take a class with Ohashi, he teaches at Omega institute and many other places.
